Industrial Boilers for Sale in South Africa
Looking for industrial boilers for sale in South Africa?
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. designs, manufactures, supplies and supports industrial boiler systems for businesses that require reliable steam for production and process heating. With more than 50 years of experience in industrial heating, we manufacture locally in Cape Town and supply boiler solutions to customers across South Africa and Southern Africa.
We supply new industrial steam boilers, STEAMATIC flash steam generators, burners and complete boiler plants, as well as selected pre-owned and refurbished boiler equipment.
The correct industrial boiler is not necessarily the largest boiler or the boiler with the lowest purchase price. The maximum steam requirement tells you how much capacity you need. The load profile tells you what type of boiler plant you should consider.
A process with a continuous, high steam demand may be well suited to a conventional fire-tube boiler. A factory with a high peak demand but highly variable or batch-type steam consumption may require a different approach.
We look at the complete application — including steam output, pressure, load profile, fuel, water quality, operating hours and infrastructure — before recommending a boiler solution.
Industrial Boiler Solutions
There is no single boiler technology that is best for every industrial application. The appropriate solution depends on how much steam the process requires, at what pressure, how that demand changes during production and how the boiler will be fired.
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. supplies and manufactures a range of industrial steam and process heating solutions.
Fire-Tube Industrial Steam Boilers
Fire-tube boilers are a proven technology for large industrial steam requirements, particularly where there is a high and relatively continuous demand for steam.
In a fire-tube boiler, hot combustion gases pass through tubes surrounded by water, transferring heat to the boiler water and generating steam. Their relatively large water and steam inventory provides useful thermal buffering and makes them well suited to applications where the boiler operates for extended periods at substantial firing rates.
They are particularly worth considering for continuous, high-load applications from approximately 5 t/h and above, subject to the specific application and operating conditions.
A typical example is a power-generation or utility application with a genuinely continuous steam requirement, where the boiler can operate at a high percentage of its rated capacity for extended periods.
High Steam Capacity Does Not Necessarily Mean a Stable Steam Load
This is an important distinction when selecting an industrial boiler.
A factory may have a peak steam requirement of 5, 10 or 20 tonnes per hour and still have a highly variable actual steam demand.
Multiple production processes may start and stop independently. Production rates change, individual process users modulate their steam consumption and entire production lines may periodically shut down.
The result can be a boiler plant with a high installed capacity but a continuously changing aggregate load.
Simply selecting a large fire-tube boiler because the peak steam requirement is high can therefore result in the boiler spending substantial periods operating well below its design capacity.
For genuinely continuous high-load applications, a fire-tube boiler can be an excellent solution. Where steam demand is highly variable, intermittent or batch-based, however, a different boiler technology or a combination of smaller boilers may provide better load matching and operating efficiency.
This is why Cape Boiler & Heater Co. considers the actual steam demand profile, rather than selecting a boiler based solely on the maximum stated steam requirement.
Water-Tube Industrial Boilers
In a water-tube boiler, water flows through tubes that are heated externally by combustion gases.
Water-tube technology can be appropriate for higher-pressure applications, high steam generation rates and specialised industrial processes where its characteristics provide an advantage.
The appropriate boiler design depends on the required pressure, steam capacity, operating conditions and application. A water-tube boiler is not automatically the correct choice simply because a plant has a high steam requirement.
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. can assess the application and determine which boiler technology is appropriate for the required duty.
STEAMATIC Flash Steam Generators
For applications requiring rapid steam generation, responsive operation and close matching of steam production to process demand, Cape Boiler & Heater Co. manufactures the STEAMATIC range of flash steam generators.
STEAMATIC is a locally manufactured monotube flash steam generator designed to produce steam rapidly without maintaining the large volume of stored water associated with a conventional boiler.
The range covers approximately 33 kg/h to 5,000 kg/h, with higher-pressure configurations available for specialised applications.
Why Consider a STEAMATIC?
- Rapid steam production
- Fast response to changing steam demand
- Low volume of stored water
- Compact footprint
- Rapid start-up
- Suitable for variable and intermittent steam loads
- Multiple units can be combined for greater capacity
- Available for a range of industrial fuels
- Manufactured in South Africa
STEAMATIC is particularly relevant where steam demand changes significantly during the production cycle and where the boiler plant needs to respond quickly rather than continuously maintaining a large steam and water inventory.
STEAMATIC systems can also be supplied as complete, pre-assembled steam plants incorporating the feedwater system, controls, burner and associated equipment.
The Maximum Steam Requirement Is Only Part of the Answer
When selecting an industrial boiler, the first number most people provide is the required steam capacity.
That is important — but it is not enough.
A proper boiler selection should consider:
Peak steam demand → normal operating demand → minimum demand → duration at each load → frequency of load changes.
For example, a plant requiring 10 t/h at peak production may spend much of its operating time at 3–5 t/h. That is a very different operating profile from a plant requiring a relatively constant 10 t/h throughout the production day.
This distinction can materially affect:
- Boiler technology
- Number of boilers
- Burner turndown
- Combustion control
- Fuel consumption
- Cycling
- Response time
- Capital cost
- Maintenance requirements
In some applications, two smaller boilers operating in parallel can provide better operational flexibility than one large boiler, particularly where production demand varies significantly.
In others, a rapid-response flash steam generator may be more appropriate.
The correct answer comes from understanding the process rather than simply matching the boiler to the highest number on a specification sheet.
How to Choose an Industrial Boiler
Steam Output
Steam output is normally specified in kg/h or tonnes per hour (t/h).
The boiler should be capable of meeting the required peak demand while also operating efficiently during normal production.
An undersized boiler can restrict production. An unnecessarily oversized boiler can increase capital cost and may operate inefficiently if its firing system cannot adequately match the actual load.
Operating Pressure
The required steam pressure is determined by the process and steam distribution system.
The boiler, safety valves, controls, piping and associated equipment must all be suitable for the required operating and design pressure.
Fuel
Fuel selection has a direct impact on both capital and operating cost.
Depending on the application and site infrastructure, industrial boilers can be configured for:
- Natural gas
- LPG
- Diesel
- Paraffin
- Biomass and solid fuels
- Biogas and other specialised fuels
Where appropriate, changing the fuel or upgrading the combustion system can materially change the economics of an existing boiler plant.
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. also provides industrial burner and fuel-conversion solutions, including LPG and natural gas conversions.
Operating Hours
A boiler operating eight hours per day has a different economic case from one operating continuously, 24 hours a day.
Capital expenditure, fuel efficiency, maintenance and expected equipment life should therefore all be considered over the expected operating period.
Feedwater and Water Treatment
Boiler performance and reliability are strongly influenced by feedwater quality.
Depending on the boiler and application, the complete system may require:
- Feedwater pumps
- Hotwell or feedwater tank
- Water softening
- Chemical dosing
- Blowdown control
- Water monitoring
- Deaeration where required
Poor water treatment can result in scale, corrosion, carryover and reduced boiler reliability.
Boiler Efficiency Is More Than the Boiler Itself
When comparing industrial boilers, it is important to look beyond the boiler’s nameplate efficiency.
The burner, combustion control, fuel, load profile and operating strategy all influence the actual cost of producing steam.
A boiler operating at high load with a properly controlled burner may perform very differently from an oversized boiler operating for long periods at low load.
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. can integrate advanced combustion management into industrial boiler plants, including AUTOFLAME combustion controls, micro-modulation and oxygen trim where appropriate.
Micro-modulating combustion control allows burner output to follow the boiler load rather than simply operating at high fire, low fire or off.
With appropriate oxygen monitoring and trim, combustion can also be continuously adjusted to maintain the required air-fuel ratio as operating conditions change.
The objective is straightforward:
Produce the steam the process needs, when it needs it, while avoiding unnecessary fuel consumption.
Complete Industrial Boiler Plants
An industrial boiler is only one part of the steam system.
A reliable boiler installation also requires the correct:
- Burner
- Combustion controls
- Feedwater pumps
- Hotwell or feedwater tank
- Water treatment
- Chemical dosing
- Safety valves
- Instrumentation
- Fuel train
- Steam separation equipment
- Blowdown system
- Chimney and flue system
- Steam and fuel piping
- Electrical and control systems
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. can engineer and supply these systems as an integrated plant rather than treating the boiler as an isolated piece of equipment.
This is particularly important when replacing an existing boiler, changing fuel or installing a new steam plant where the boiler, burner, fuel system, water treatment and controls all need to work together.
New Industrial Boilers or Pre-Owned Boilers?
Buying a new boiler is not always the only sensible option.
For some projects, a pre-owned or refurbished industrial boiler can provide a lower-capital-cost solution, particularly where the required capacity and pressure are readily available and the project programme is time-sensitive.
Cape Boiler & Heater Co. also offers selected pre-owned and refurbished boilers, burners and associated equipment. Availability changes regularly.
When considering a used industrial boiler, the purchase price should not be the only consideration. The condition of the pressure vessel, burner, controls, valves and associated equipment, together with statutory requirements and the cost of recommissioning, should all be assessed.
Industrial Boiler Replacement and Upgrades
If an existing boiler is becoming unreliable or expensive to operate, complete replacement is not necessarily the only option.
Depending on the condition and age of the existing equipment, potential solutions can include:
- Burner replacement
- Fuel conversion
- Combustion control upgrades
- Oxygen trim
- Boiler control upgrades
- Feedwater improvements
- Water treatment upgrades
- Heat recovery
- Complete boiler replacement
The correct decision should be based on capital cost, expected fuel savings, reliability, maintenance requirements and remaining equipment life.
In many cases, improving the combustion system or changing fuel can be considered alongside replacing the boiler itself.
